He's not ALL That (a work of fiction)

"What am I here for- your wife satisfies your every need" I had asked him

He gave a sly reply, "I want to show you off during official functions and dinners"

To which I replied "You can hire people for that"

And he quickly responded "... but I can't be hiring different people all the time, I have a public image to protect... why don't you let me hire you instead" 

That was meant as a joke but it chewed me inside. I am the "trophy" to be shown and his wife stays at home faithful and loyal, attending to his every whim.

"I am sorry to disappoint you but I am not that person"... this was how the conversation went in my head, adamant and assertive and firm, representative of strong women of the world.

What came out was "Let's have dinner, I'm hungry"

Despite all that inner conflict, it doesn't take away the fact I am unreasonably in love with him.
