Apple Crumble

This is one of my favouritest comfort food, ever.. very simple to make & yet very tasty.. the prep time (start to finish) is about 1 hour.. the longest time taken is in the apples' cutting and peeling. Once that is done, you're smooth sailing all the way.

I had tried Apple Crumble one autumn day in UK and fell in love with it.. and with limited student budget I could not afford frequent splurges on dessert, so I learnt to make it on my own. Rather, either Ainsley or Jamie Oliver had taught the UK public from one of their TV shows & I picked it up. Green apples are very3 cheap there & the remaining ingredients, we already have in the cupboard.

There are 2 parts to this recipe

APPLE

  • Peel & cube some green apples (any amount, to your liking)
  • Some sugar (brown or white, either is fine but I like the taste of brown sugar better)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or cinnamon powder or nutmeg powder)- if not available, do without
  • a pinch of salt

Cook this mixture over low fire, stirring frequently to avoid burning. Once the apple turns brown & a little soft/ mushy, turn off the fire & set aside (while you prepare the crumble). Note: do not cook the apples until it is too mushy, otherwise you'll end up with apple jam.

CRUMBLE

  • Some flour
  • Some brown or white sugar (perhaps 1 part flour and 1/6 or 1/8 part sugar)
  • Some butter
  • If butter is unsalted, add a pinch of salt

Use clean and dry hands to mix these together, until you get the consistency like bread crumb. Once the ingredients mix and become crumbly, stop mixing. (If you continue mixing/ kneading, this mixture may turn to apple pie crust, or currypuff shell)

Next, combine the apple & crumble. The apple will sit at the bottom layer and the crumble is spread on top, fully covering the apple mixture. Bake for 180 degrees celcius for approx 20-30 minutes (depending on the quantity baked). Serve hot on its own, or with vanilla ice-cream.

There you go- apple crumble recipe! 😋
