Issues surrounding Generative AI

What, Me Worry? (mit.edu)

This piece discusses the hype surrounding AI, but the author ends on the right note I feel.

It seems an idealistic statement, but one that I can subscribe to.

"We’re all stakeholders in the AI revolution. Let’s embrace that responsibility and strive to ensure that the good actors outweigh the bad."

Getting Things Done

Dear Mr David Allen, thanks for sharing your tips in this book. I am reading and digesting it, to the best of my ability. I swear I will finish reading the book within these 2 days. I WILL!

p/s: My next entry shall be the summary of this book

Have you ever asked what she wanted?

This is a true story: a friend of mine married his second wife before she could finish her degree studies.

They had met when she was a student, when he was invited to give a talk about his career.

Their eyes locked & the rest, they say, is history.

Since he is well-to-do, after the marriage he bought her a house with all modern conveniences, a few cars & she was bedecked with jewelry suitable for his/ her/ their status. She is a stay-at-home mom, and takes care of their 3 daughters.

Everything looks settled, yes?

One time we had a chat (me and him), on whether she may be interested to continue her studies (particularly, to finish her degree), because I am an academic and all that. He literally snapped back and said "she's happy where she is, she's not interested/ there's no necessity to continue her degree"

Well, is she?

I wish he would ask her, to be fair.

For all we know she would want to, at some point. Not now, but maybe later?

If she really doesn't want to, then it's great too. If that is her solemn choice.

Note to Self: Stop being a busybody 💀

Living on Borrowed Time (Part 2)

I pray that I have enough time to share.

Currently I am sharing as much as I can with colleagues and students, and the public via linkedin.

I want to learn to do video editing and release content on YT and remember to have them backed up in my blogs. If ever I become popular and the YT channel is hacked, I will still have the files.

What is my focus: Law? Teaching & Learning? Research? Design Thinking? Instructional Design

Looks like there are a couple of options 💃

Also thinking of online course design. However the account belongs to the university. Probably that will be considered my sadaqah to them & let these courses all go.

Getting Things Done | Too Many Cooks

We are organising a conference in September.

There are a few of us in charge of different parts of the event.

Me & 4 others are handling internal promotions & the website.

Initial design was agreed & thorough content was provided by another colleague.

This colleague had handled many academic conferences in the past & has the complete templates for use.

What transpired was something else:
- another Professor invited herself and wanted to promote her event, riding on our conference promotions
- amongst us there were many 'idea contributors' that confused the website designers
- the website designers did not consider UI/ UX and the design came out below par
- a UI/UX designer has to be brought in by another colleague, who doesn't have the heart to let a sub-par website be released to the world
- the sponsors had some ideas too & more changes had to be made to the website and posters

We made the website request in March. The website to this still had additions/ changes to make in June 2023, however we can now safely promote the link without causing shock & horror.

Moral of the story: don't get involved?

Must learn resolve & not comment at all, UNLESS I'm willing to get involved all the way
The less I know the better.

When the past comes back to haunt you

a.k.a. What was the RM2.3 bil UEM/Renong transaction 26 years ago that MACC is now investigating?

Like any good old plagiarism cases (or academic misconduct) that returned to bite certain high profile individuals in the back, other cases take equally long to surface.

Kudos to The Edge Malaysia for smelling the stink and reporting it in 1997.

In another story, Jho Low's friend/ aide has died of a stroke. Malay Mail reported: Police: No foul play in death of informant who placed Jho Low in Macau. Foul play? Of course not! Jho Low's only the most wanted person in Malaysia right now. The aide has suffered a massive stroke apparently and coincidentally too, after he had revealed Jho Low & friends' whereabouts.
